Staying safe when swimming at Salford Watersports Centre

At the moment, Avian Flu (bird flu) has been detected in local wild birds, and we’re reminding all swimmers and visitors to follow simple hygiene and safety advice when taking part in open-water activities.

Staying Safe in Open Water

To help protect yourself and others:

  • Avoid swallowing water or getting it in your mouth.
  • Cover cuts and scratches with waterproof plasters before entering the water.
  • Wear protective gear, such as a wetsuit.
  • Do not touch or feed birds, and avoid any contact with bird droppings.
  • Wash your hands thoroughly with soap and water after swimming.
  • Shower when you get home, and make sure to clean and dry your equipment, wetsuit, or swimsuit.
  • If you start to feel unwell after swimming, please seek medical advice and let them know that you have been swimming in open water.

Reporting Dead Birds

If you spot a dead bird in the area, please report it to:

  • Weekdays: watersportscentre@scll.co.uk
